How The International Development Academy Is Ensuring A Safe Return To Play

Updated: Aug 26, 2020

The safety of all athletes, coaches and staff at the International Development Academy is our number one priority. We are taking all of the precautions necessary to ensure that we meet COVID-19 guidelines as we continue to provide a safe environment for athletes to get the proper IDA experience. With 2 separate academies in 2 different countries, it was extremely important for us to outline different procedures and protocols given the local guidelines of each academy location.

The IDA UK is scheduled to begin on September 1st. Upon arrival, athletes will spend fourteen days in quarantine (per CDC guidelines). There will be six athletes and one IDA staff member per house, each with individual bedrooms and meals will be delivered directly to the house. Each house will be professionally sanitized once per week. Throughout the course of the quarantine, players will be screened and monitored for symptoms via temperature checks and questionnaires.

Following the 14 day quarantine period, players will participate in a two week pre-season training, all taking place at IDA facilities. There will be pre-season games against IDA UK teams as well as local teams. The 3 squads- Elite, Development and Performance, will be playing 1 to 2 games per week depending on the league.

The official start to the IDA Spain season is scheduled for September 1st, with training camps beginning in the final week of August. The players as IDA Spain academy will play around 25-30 friendly games during the year.

The Spanish FA league is set to start on October 4th. Our players will join different club across the region. The teams will be playing in 24 league games throughout the course of the season.

Spain does not currently require a quarantine period for travelers coming from outside of the country, however athletes were required to quarantine on campus for 14 days before being able to leave the facility. Housing at the IDA is set up to be entirely self sufficient, so that athletes were able to train, workout and study during this 14 day period.

Once the season starts in October, there will be 1 to 2 games per week. Before each match, we will be administering temperature checks, providing hydroalcoholic sanitizer stations, and ensuring that only IDA team members and staff have access to the locker rooms. Additionally, all of the league clubs are required to send a list of participating players to the federation 48 hours in advance to ensure proper contact tracing if necessary. Spectators will be limited to 75% capacity and will be required to use separate entrances from the athletes and staff.

We are looking forward to safe and successful seasons at both IDA locations. Safety is our first priority, and we will continue to follow local guidelines and best practices to ensure that we can continue to provide an amazing experience for all players.
